What is the Housing Choice Voucher Program?
The Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program, formerly known as Section 8, is a federally funded program for assisting very low-income families, elderly, and disabled households to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market.
How does it work?
Eligible Participants will have a housing subsidy paid to the landlord directly by OCHA on behalf of the participating family on a unit of their choice within the Oklahoma City limits. The family then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program which is generally 30% of their adjusted income.
Households that participate in the HCV program are selected from OCHA’s waitlist.
The Housing Choice Voucher program is a free-choice approach to assisted housing. You are free to choose any type dwelling unit, in the city limits of Oklahoma City, as long as it meets certain requirements for rent limits, rent reasonableness and Housing Quality Standards (HQS). The landlord retains private property rights, including management, tenant selection and maintenance. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) determines the rules and regulations for the HCV Program.
Am I Eligible?
Eligibility is determined by family size, and gross (amount before any taxes or deductions) annual income for the family. You may be eligible as an individual or a family if your gross annual income does not exceed income guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). There are no minimum income requirements.
